The Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) was established to develop and implement a voluntary national accreditation program for state, local, territorial, and tribal governmental public health departments. The goal is to protect and improve the public’s health through improved quality and performance of departments’ public health functions. A four-year developmental phase is underway to adopt standards and measures, design an assessment processes for applicants, and conduct an 18-month beta test of the standards and processes. The developmental phase will consider financing and incentives as well as research and evaluation. The formal rollout of the program will occur in early 2011. PHAB is funded by CDC and RWJF.
